. . . Gold Coast felines hit the catwalk. . .

Brisbane judge Janis Christison judges Zarlee Moonwalker, a Lilac Point Birman, bred by W Hamilton; owned by M Thistlewaite.

The Gold Coast Cat Club held the first of its two annual cat shows recently. In excess of 100 cats competed, with over 400 members of the public visiting to watch the judging and to admire the beautiful cats.

At cat shows, the cats are separated into Longhairs, Shorthairs and Companions.

Within the Longhair and Shorthair groups are further divisions into Kittens, Cats (above age nine months; not desexed), and Desexed.

Companion cats include non-pedigree cats which are either moggies (domestics) or mixed breeds, as well as any pedigree cats that aren’t quite up to the breed standard or don’t have registration papers. Companion cats aged six months or over must be desexed to enter a cat show.

Every single cat entered into the show is judged by three judges on the day. The best of each section is then judged by a fourth judge to end up with a Supreme Longhair, a Supreme Shorthair and, you guessed it, a Companion Supreme. Points from each win count towards the Cat of the Year titles: prestigious awards given out at the end of each year, with awards for the best within each breed as well as an overall winner in each of the major categories of Longhairs, Shorthairs and Companions.

Top-left: Nadine Savage, a Brisbane judge, with Fidelis Keira, a Black Silver Mackerel Tabby & White Maine Coon, bred and owned by T Lamb. Top-center: Jo-anne Frank, a visiting South Australian judge, with Kyapark Make Me Purrform, a Blue Mink & White Devon Rex kitten, bred and owned by P Watts. Top-right: Visiting from Toowoomba, Chris Merritt judges a Lilac Burmese kitten, Deneden Dusty Springfield, bred by D Hewat; owned by J & J Franklin.

For this show, the cats were evaluated by a judge from Tasmania, one from South Australia, and three Queensland judges. The public was able to watch these cat experts judge each cat at the show and listen to their comments, and then walk around looking into the individual cages once judging for that ring was completed. They could also chat to breeders about specific cats to learn more about that breed.

There were displays in the foyer featuring a multitude of cat-related products, including scratching posts to suit all budgets, kitty litter and trays, toys, beds, pet photographers, as well as heaps of great raffles for the cat lovers who braved the heat, humidity and rain to attend the show.

The Supremes, or big winners of the day, were: Longhairs: Glenbar Gemma, a white Persian owned by Yvonne Walker of Tweed Heads; Shorthairs: Kaloofa Hard Yakka, a Blue British Shorthair owned by Carolynne Power of Brisbane; and Companion: Oops a Daisy, a crossbreed owned by Kerstin Jones of Brisbane.

Top-center:Longhair Supreme, Glenbar Gemma, a desexed white Persian, bred by R Pooley; owned by Y Walker, with steward Natasha Shinners. Top-right: Shorthair Supreme, Kaloofa Hard Yakka, a blue British Shorthair, bred & owned by C Power, shown here with judge Greg Little and steward Christine Mangin.

The next show will be on Saturday the 26th June 2010 at the Albert Waterways Community Centre, Broadbeach (opposite Pacific Fair cinemas), corner Sunshine and Hooker Boulevards, and will feature two overseas judges.

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.goldcoastcatclub.com.

. . . International aid for animals in need. . .

Based in the UK, International Aid for the Protection of Welfare & Animals (IAPWA) provides help for companion animals in Sabah, Borneo.

Founded by animal lovers Nicky Stevens and Lynsey Gill, IAPWA are a non profit organisation, creating a better future for animals in need.

Following a trip to Borneo early last year, Nicky and Lynsey were shocked to see the condition of many dogs and cats that face many difficulties everyday just to survive.

Their mission is to provide hope and protection for animals in need by preventing cruelty and promoting animal welfare. They intend to achieve this mission in the following ways:

• Addressing the overpopulation problem facing companion animals through implementing Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programmes

• Establishing veterinary clinics to provide medical treatment to those in need

• Working with a local group to build a sanctuary for those that require long term care and are unable to cope on the streets

• Creating a compassionate society through working with and providing an education programme to the local community

• Discouraging the sale of animals by unlicensed pet breeders and encouraging responsible pet ownership

__________________________________

• Campaigning for change to prevent cruelty and end inhumane practices

• Operating a membership scheme to create a network of IAPWA supporters worldwide

• Creating partnerships with other welfare organisations to unite in a shared goal of ending animal cruelty

IAPWA are working tirelessly to end pain, neglect and inhumane practices. They have started to generate a lot of support throughout the UK and would be grateful to have the support of the animal lovers in Queensland and Australia.

For more information and to donate to IAPWA, visit their website www.iapwa.org.

. . . Finding lost pets . . .

Trying to find a missing pet is a traumatic and often scary experience. The feeling of guilt, fear and anxiety is overwhelming.

Pets are curious creatures and can go walk-a-bout at any time. This is why it is important to micro-chip your pet, attached a name tag to his collar with your contact details, along with his local council registration colour tag.

Always ensure that you have a recent photo of your pet, showing distinguishable markings and colours.

Here are some helpful tips to find a missing pet:
• Knock on doors in your street

• Call your local vet and surrounding vets
• Create posters, and hand them out in your neighbourhood
• Contact local shelters, local council and government agencies
• Leave out food and water for your pet, familiar smells can lead them home
• If you have recently moved, be sure to check your old neighbourhood
• Once your pet has been located, investigate how your pet was misplaced.
• If your pet has an escaping problem, obedience training would be beneficial.

If you have recently lost a pet, this is where Find My Pet can help. Find My Pet provides online listings were you are able to:
• Post photos of your lost pet
• Contact other Find My Pet members in your area
• Post your lost pet’s details on Facebook and

     CALLING ALL NAUGHTY AUSSIE DOGS!

Bark Busters, the world’s largest dog training company, has joined forces with Vetalogica, a leader in animal nutrition and healthcare, to launch the inaugural Australia’s Naughtiest Dog Contest to find the naughtiest dog in Australia.

Dog owners around Australia are invited to submit a photo and short story or video clip illustrating why their dog should be named the naughtiest in Australia. Any dog can be entered into the contest – regardless of breed and age. The contest kicked off this week and runs until Wednesday 30 June 2010. Winners (there are seven state and territory winners and one grand prize winner) will be selected by a panel of experts, and the overall winner will receive a package of prizes, including free dog training – which includes Bark Busters’ guaranteed lifetime support – and Vetalogica products to transform the winning dog from naughty to nice.

“Australia’s Naughtiest Dog Contest is designed to show Australia that you can teach an old dog new tricks,” says Kelly McClelland, a Bark Busters trainer. “Bark Busters and Vetalogica have created this contest to highlight that you don’t need to give up on your dog, because every dog – even older ones – can be trained and be part of a happy and tranquil home.

“We want to showcase this fact by training Australia’s naughtiest dog and having a bit of fun along the way. Whether your dog jumps, barks, digs, pulls, snarls, chews, destroys or suffers from separation anxiety, then you need to enter Australia’s Naughtiest Dog Contest. And with around 3.7 million dogs in Australia, we are sure to find some naughty ones.”

RSPCA SHUTS DOWN PUPPY FARM [Featured in the Paws & Claws March E-News!]

Should they still be allow to keep animals?

This farm should be shut down and these people should NEVER EVER be allowed to own any type of animal again, I think it is a total disgrace, I am not a religious person but it should be an eye for an eye, lets see how they like being treated the way that they treated these poor little dogs.

Regards

Leanne, Qld

BREEDERS LICENSE SCHEME [Featured in the Paws & Claws February E-News!]

Should the Breeder License Scheme go ahead?

The Breeder License Scheme - that would be good IF there was a way to stop ALL backyard breeders of Xbreeds from breeding but this can not be policed as there is not enough inspectors to do the job.
I have been breeding purebred dogs for some 35 years and I am registered with the CCC as a registered Breeder and have to uphold our code of ethics.
So why do we as Registered Breeders need another controlling body to tell us what we can and can not do WHEN you will never be able to stop the backyarders from breeding their prize breeds.
The only reason breeds are so popular is due to a well known TV personality telling the general public that there is TOO many problems with the purebreds today.
You can not tell me that Mrs Jones who goes out and purchases a girl pup from the local pet shop and 12 months down the track she thinks maybe we will breed just one litter before we get her spayed. So Mrs Jones knows Mr Smith also purchases a male from the same shop.
Can you tell me if Mr Smith and Mrs Jones have done DNA testing on there xbreeds purchased from the local pet shop before breeding them, I will bet anything they have not done this, so who is the Breeder License Scheme going to protect ONLY people who purchase a Purebred Dog from a Registered Breeder who is already registered as a breeder with they state controlling body like the Canine Control Council.
Also who would Mr Smith or Mrs Jones know if they were mating brother and sister from the same pet shop?

Concerned Purebred Breeder
