INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL
SAVIOUR TO VISIT GOLD COAST
The 2nd National Summit
to End Companion Animal Overpopulation will be held on the
Gold Coast on 1st and 2nd October. Organised
by the National Desexing Network and the Animal Welfare League
of Qld, and co-sponsored by Animals Australia, this ground-breaking
event is aimed at sharing and progressing legislative and
policy changes to end the killing of over 200 000 healthy
and treatable cats and dogs in Australia each year. Representatives
from each state and territory in Australia, from NZ and also
from the USA, will be presenting the latest information on
progress towards ending the killing and will share their
successful strategies. The main international speaker this
year is Michael Mountain, founder of Best Friends Society
(which runs one of the largest sanctuaries in the US) and
founder of the No More Homeless Pets movement. Also being
the editor of Best Friends magazine, Mr Mountain
has led the way in changing the whole tone of animal welfare
literature -- from sad, gory, and guilt-making, to upbeat,
encouraging, and empowering.

Last
year 130 delegates from around Australia and New Zealand

to share strategies and develop agreement on actions that
were needed to prevent the killing of healthy and treatable
cats and dogs.Government animal control officers, refuge
and pound staff and volunteers, rangers, vets, breeders,
wildlife enthusiasts and general public concerned about
animals will be attending the Summit. The general public
also will have a chance to hear Michael Mountain speak
at An Evening with Michael Mountain - Getting
to Zero Euthaniasia.”This special event will be held
at the AWL Sanctuary on Wednesday

7,000
signatures gathered to rescue 7,000 tortured Moon Bears |
After
an eight week campaign covering seven capital cities, Animals
Asia Foundation (AAF) met with representatives from the Chinese
Embassy and presented more than 7,000 signatures from people
who had “signed
on to end bear farming”.
The signatures were collected on four massive banners, depicting both farmed
and freed bears and more than 3,000 postcards sent to AAF by people eager to
see the cruel and unnecessary practice of bear bile farming abolished.
Since signing an agreement with AAF in 2000,
the Government has closed down a
|
 |
number
of farms and released 219 bears into the care of Animals Asia
but it is hoped that with irrefutable evidence showing bear
farming is cruel, alternatives to bile are readily available
and that the bile being collected is full of pus and potentially
harming consumers, that this barbaric practice be relegated
to the history books.
Animals Asia has been working in Vietnam
on the issue of bear farming for eight long years. The practice
there is illegal and in November 2005, AAF signed a formal
agreement to rescue 200 farmed bears in Hanoi, the first of
which are due to arrive in October this year. |
Animals Asia Foundation
Founder and CEO Jill Robinson MBE said that over the next 12 months,
the eyes of the world would be on China, giving its leaders the perfect
opportunity to show their green credentials by bringing an end to
the industry.
"We applaud Beijing for deciding to make the next Olympics the "Green
Games". But together with thousands of people around Australia and
the world, we ask that Beijing show that it truly cares for the environment
by banning this brutal, unnecessary industry.”

MISSING
CAT
I haven’t seen my beloved cat Missy
since yesterday morning (Tuesday 25th September). She was last seen
on Fairweather Drive, Parkwood. She is ten years old, very affectionate,
bossy and very much the top cat. She is also very loyal and loving
and I have very grave fears about her safety since she is very homebound
and only ever goes as far as the garden for some morning sun. If
anyone has any information about her or any other cats missing in
this area (Greenacre Drive) I would very much appreciate hearing
from you.
